FIVE burgeoning businesses have signed up for Lake Macquarie's new Small Business Centre.

The business incubator in Oakdale Rd, Gateshead, was officially opened yesterday by Hunter-based Senator John Tierney, Lake Macquarie Mayor John Kilpatrick and centre chairman Glenn Thornton.

The officials were assisted by children from Jewells and Toronto primary schools who cut a ribbon at the entrance of the building.

The centre will eventually house 20 office and light industrial businesses.

Senator Tierney said that over the past 15 years small business had delivered most of the new jobs in the economy.

`This is why the Commonwealth Government has committed $500,000 under the Regional Assistance Program for the establishment of this centre over three years,' he said.

`It's expected that by 2003 the incubator will be self-funding.'

The incubator has been designed to assist new and growing businesses to become established and profitable.

It provides them with premises, advice, services and support.

The centre is managed by Tony Morison and funded by Lake Macquarie City Council, the Department of Employment, Workplace Relations and Small Business and the BHP Trust Fund.

Up to 500 jobs will eventually be created through the centre and its activities.
